Scientific Visualization

The Fulton High Performance Computing Initiatives offers expert support for producing 2D or 3D visualizations of scientific data through the Science and Engineering Research Visualization program (SERV).  Visualization is a crucial tool in gaining understanding from the increasingly complex datasets that modern research provides.
By enabling researchers to visualize their complex datasets, the Fulton HPCI can help accelerate research progress and extract new knowledge from data.

The valuable benefit scientific visualization offers for research comes from the ability to validate algorithms or processes already under development. This can yield insight into a dataset or experimental sample that was previously unreachable by conventional methods, and can help communicate results through the use of compelling images and animations.


Through the SERV program, the visualization team of the HPCI can turn your data into compelling visualizations. Once your project has been selected for SERV support, the team will examine your data, and work with you to develop the most appropriate type and style of visualization. A wide range of data types and formats can be accepted. Previous SERV projects have provided visual representations of data ranging from underground water supplies to colliding supernovae, to showing patterns and trends in crime data.

The HPCI visualization capabilities include the use of off-the-shelf software or custom solutions, and the knowledge and expertise for assisting researchers in adapting their applications and data for the best representation. Visualizations produced can range from still imagery to interactive software scaling from your desktop to immersive 3d environments.
How to get SERV support (proposals, cash, or include it in your grant):
SERV is intended to foster interdisciplinary research by visually communicating the essence of each researcher’s results to other ASU colleagues. Examples of visualization projects can be found in the Research menu under User Research Gallery.
